Are Chinese being targeted?

Recently there has been a spate of robberies against the Chinese in South Africa. Is this a fact? Are Chinese really being targeted? Isnt crime just a part of South African society and the Chinese are just part and parcel of whats been happening?

Please post your recent experiences/comments here. We want to start collecting information about whats been happening.

You can post your experiences in the blogs below as per the area you reside in - for ALL South Africans (general comments here)

Question: Are we not setting ourselves up for failure if we continue on this route? Reason why I say this is because we always come across as being whiny and whingey when we continually say that Chinese are solely being victims here. Are other racial groups not also being targeted and affected by crime? So should we just be looking at this problem from a Chinese perspective only?

Would it not be a more prudent measure to voice our concerns TOGETHER with crimes towards other racial groups so that everyone has all the facts instead of just the Chinese ‘victim’ mentality? In my opinion, we always cry foul when negatives are being forced upon us instead of uniting with other South Africans from other racial sectors to combat this problem of crime and BEE.

We need to educate other races on the plight of local Chinese BUT also listen to the stories of others. As local Chinese, we need to try encourage instead of always complaining about how we are not being fairly treated in BEE, crime or otherwise. We need to show ‘outsiders’ that we are part of South African not just in it! Is it not easier to change things from the inside rather than from the outside fighting our way in, especially when we KNOW we’re severely outnumbered, under resourced, under strength and misunderstood?

Anyways, this is just my 2 cents worth. I don’t see any good publicity coming from this and we NEED good publicity for a change.

This website is a refreshing change - a face to the frustrations of the local Chinese community. I immediately retracted into silence when the web page opened up and I realized how public the question ("Are Chinese being targeted?") was.

Having siad that I don't think that the intention of this site is to promote the idea that ONLY Chinese people are the victims of crime in South Africa. In the absence of having any formal, and appropriate, representation in South Africa the need for a unified front is long overdue for the Chinese community. Perhaps if we had a voice and were recognized then it would be easier for us to merge seamlessly into the multicultural landscape that is our country?

I see the 'nagging' and 'whining' about BEE as a completely seperate issue to this (and more about making a stand rather than aimless complaining) - it is a vital necessity in order for us to move forward as an accepted part of this country. What does unifying mean? That we just accept things as they are and move on? Is that not more cowardly than the groundless whining and whinging that we have done very well in the past?

This is positive. This means that we are not going to perpetuate the stereotypes of how we, as a people, used to be and behave. We have the opportunity to make a difference now. We have the opportunity to stamp our viewpoint in history.

Agree that we need to maintain professionalism and above-board behaviour and definitely not allow emotions and opportunities to embellish to govern what are real issues for the Chinese community in South Africa. This is not an attack on the country we call home - it is a plea to be finally accepted as its citizens.

To me it now seems that everyone is
a target. When criminals want something they do not care who it is.Obviously it is much easier on a soft target.
The government should perhaps
change the mentality or culture
of the people as there is perceptions.

This is a group where Tibetans and Chinese can discuss on the Tibet issue and relationship between Tibetan and Chinese Communities openly without prejudice and with an open mind. This is group is formed to provide a platform for the two communities to express, share and discuss their opinions with an open mind. Lack of discussions and contacts between the two communities seems to be the main reason for the current misunderstandings.

africans are great people but theives in general suck.
chinese people mostly are good but bad manners like spitting, dumping rubbish, speaking too loudly and buying off other countries asserts beg for fights,
there are not exactly little angles. but its important to get rid of hate groups anywhere in the world.
